The Tour du Valat, located in the heart of the Camargue, is a private research institute with the legal form of a non-profit foundation, recognised as being of public utility.
Its estate, which includes all the natural habitats representative of the river-Lake Camargue, extends over 2921 hectares, 1845 of which are classified as a Regional Nature Reserve. Beyond its role in conserving biodiversity, it is a privileged site for researching, testing and developing agricultural or hunting activities compatible with the maintenance of this exceptional biodiversity.
The Tour du Valat is also a unique documentary resource centre in the Mediterranean, specialising in wetland ecology. Every year, many researchers, teachers and trainees from the Mediterranean basin come to consult the library’s books and scientific resources.
